How to apply for teacher registration

1. Check which category of registration you are eligible for

The Teacher Registration Act 2012 creates four categories of registration available for teacher registration in Western Australia. Please refer to the Registration Categories page for information about each registration category.

If you currently hold teacher registration in any other Australian State or Territory or New Zealand, you may be eligible to apply for registration with the TRBWA through Mutual Recognition. Futher information is available on the Mutual Recognition page.

2. Check that you meet all of the registration requirements

As part of your application for registration, you must have your application assessed as meeting the following requirements for registration:

Please refer to the respective application form for the evidence you need to meet these requirements.  A valid application also includes the payment of the relevant fee as detailed below.

3. Create a Teacher Login account if you have not already done so

TRBWA Teacher Login is a secure online service for applicants, registered teachers and Teacher Register Information Professional (TRIP) users. Teacher Login is password protected and requires an email address to gain access.

For more information on how to access Teacher Login, please refer to the How to access Teacher Login information sheet.

4. Create and submit your application for teacher registration through Teacher Login

Select the relevant application type from the Online Forms section in Teacher Login. This online process takes you through a series of questions and sections, including:

  • Providing identity documentation
  • Providing change of name documentation (if relevant)
  • Identity verification (a list of authorised parties is available in the Authorised Witnesses for TRBWA registration purposes information sheet).
  • Providing qualification documentation
  • Providing evidence that you meet the Professional Standards (for Full Registration applications only)
  • Providing details of your teaching experience
  • Providing details of how you meet the English language requirement
  • Completing a questionnaire to determine whether you are a fit and proper person to be registered (depending on your answers to these questions, you may need to provide some additional information)
  • Provision of Overseas Criminal History Check(s)
  • Completing a Working with Children check question
  • Completing a Department of Education screening check question
  • Confirming your understanding of your registration obligations.

5. Pay your application fee

One you have completed the application, you will be directed through to some payment options for your application fee. Information on the application fees is available on the Fees page. Once you have paid your application fee, and you have provided all the necessary information and documentation, TRBWA will commence the processing of your application.

Application processing

The Board makes every effort to process applications for registration as quickly as practicable. Most applications are processed within ten weeks. Many applications take less time, but some may take longer depending on the completeness and accuracy of the documentation and information supplied, the complexity of the application and the time it takes for the results of the criminal history check to be returned to the TRBWA.

Read more about why we may require additional time to process an application.

If your registration is successfully granted, your name will appear on the public Register of Teachers. You will also receive an immediate email confirmation followed by your grant of registration letter in the mail. Your registration will be subject to a periodic renewal process.

If you have any questions about the application process, please contact us.

If you are a final year student and are applying for Provisional Registration - Graduate Teacher (Final Year Students),  you are encouraged to apply for registration in the final semester of study. Your application will be finalised once your final academic transcript has been received.
