It is generally expected that to maintain proficiency as a teacher you are currently or have been actively engaged in teaching in an educational institution for a reasonable period of time. Therefore, it is a requirement for the renewal of teacher registration that a teacher has taught in Australia or New Zealand for a minimum period of time.
As a result, as part of the renewal of registration application process, you will be asked to declare that you have met the minimum requirements for professional engagement.
The professional engagement required (minimum days taught) to satisfy the registration renewal requirements is:
Category |
Minimum number of professional engagement (days taught) required |
Full Registration |
100 full working days or a period of time that would be equivalent in hours |
Limited or Provisional granted for 3 years |
60 full working days or a period of time that would be equivalent in hours |
Limited or Provisional granted for less than 3 years |
Calculated on a pro rata basis for the period since the registration was last granted or renewed, to the date of application at the rate of 20 full working days for each year |
The TRBWA may require that you provide evidence to support your declaration.
Should you not be able to fulfil this requirement as part of the renewal process, you may submit a request to the Board to consider where there are sufficient reasons for the professional engagement requirement not to apply in your particular case.
Please note, registered teachers holding Full Registration, who at the time of application are working, in education related roles, based in settings other than educational institutions, and who have not taught the required minimum number of days since registration was last granted or renewed, will not be eligible to renew Full Registration. Activity undertaken in these roles is not considered to be 'teaching' under the Teacher Registration Act 2012.
Periods of time engaged in other roles that are ancillary to teaching, such as teacher educators in universities, tutors, officers of employers/sector heads/unions or education officers based in settings other than schools are generally not considered to be teaching for the purposes of professional engagement requirements for the renewal of registration.
The Professional Engagement (for the renewal of registration) Policy outlines the requirements for the renewal of registration.
